What are you looking for?
We tend to focus on the singular spirits here. One malted entity, flavored in time, paired with a #donut. As simple as that sounds, past pairings can become complex quicker than realized. Perhaps this is why blends, which most view as ‘smooth’ while providing infinite flavors and characteristics, can overwhelm the #WhiskyAndDonuts experience! But what we found here is another example of the beautiful and inevitable intervention.
Independent bottler Douglas Laing’s Big Peat Small Batch blended single malt has had a cult following since its creation 2009. A wonderful introduction to #Islay style #whisky, this bottle cohesively presents just about every characteristic the island has to offer. With an approachable strength and an unfiltered approach, there is plenty to be enjoyed. Surprisingly subtle in the peat smoke department, the juice allows for the delicious sea salts, herbaceous sweetness and delicate cracked pepper spice to flourish! Perhaps this dram is one of the best introductions for an Islay newbie drinker but still offers plenty of silky #Scottish West Coast style variation to be desired by the familiar.
GoodTown Doughnuts’s Maple Walnut donut is lovely pairing for the whisky. The light and slightly buttery brioche dough leaves room for the dry wine and peppered palate of the hooch while the toasted vanilla and crush walnut topping glaze reinforces the sweet salty airiness!
Like the successful marriage of the iconic distilleries stamped within this expression, this pairing is best when given time to patiently dissect all of the elements!
We hope you find the time this weekend to take stock, celebrate the achievements and honor what was with a dram and a donut.
Stay tuned for more beautiful pairings very soon!
